Injuries can occur if the pad is too short. Professional trainers who absorb impact all day long wear strong pads along with shin pads and belly pads for protection. Beginners may also use shin pads. Stretchy gauze-like hand-wraps are recommended. Velcro fastening is used in many Thai pads and is quickly replacing the old pads with buckles or tiny straps. The straps on the pads should be riveted strongly enough to stay firm long after initial use.
Vinyl pads can cost under $30, with tough, leather Thai pads going for $100 or more. But you can get good heavy-duty leather pads for about $70. The vinyl pads can still be designed for heavy workouts and to withstand consistent strikes. There are also new products, often called arm mitts, that are a cheaper alternative but just as effective as Thai pads.

Protection is extremely important when dealing in any martial art. Thai pads must be used, but shin pads are also recommended when practicing, especially if you are not yet conditioned enough to take full power blows. It also protects your partner when kicking during competition or practice.
