1. Aromatherapy Soothes Mind, Body and Spirit

Simply put, aromatherapy is the art and science of using concentrated essential oils extracted from herbs, flowers and other plants, used to sooth a host of physical and mental discomforts. Although aromatherapy is a holistic, non-invasive treatment, essential oils are very powerful substances and should be used with great care.

2. Peppermint and Eucalyptus Are at the Top of the List

The two most widely used essential oils are peppermint, used to relieve headaches and indigestion; and eucalyptus, which eases muscle tension and respiratory disturbances such as coughs, colds and asthma. Peppermint and eucalyptus are followed in frequency of usage by ylang ylang, an effective anti-depressant which promotes also relaxation and relieves muscle tension; geranium, which promotes relaxation and balances hormones; and lavender, helpful in promoting sleep, easing stress and healing wounds.

3. Aromatherapy Makes a Good Massage Even Better

A few drops of essential oil combined with a soothing massage oil can increase the effectiveness of any massage. Just three to five drops of essential oil blended with a base oil can be very useful in the treatment of constipation, arthritis, muscle aches and pains, stress, emotional disorders and migraines. If you would like to give aromatherapy massage a try, make an appointment with a massage therapist that is trained in the use of aromatherapy. The use of essential oils in massage is complex and requires specific training.

4. A Warm Bath Can Cure What Ails You

A warm bath can soak your cares away, but combined with essential oils, it becomes a treatment for aches and pains, respiratory ailments and skin disorders. Recommended dosage for an effective aromatherapy bath is five to ten drops in a full tub of warm water. Drop the oil in the water just before you get in the tub. If you have sensitive skin, dilute the essential oil with powdered milk, therapeutic bath oil or sea salts. No time for the full-bath treatment? Try soaking your feet or hands in a basin of warm water and five to seven drops of essential oil. A foot or hand bath can promote healing of athlete's foot, poor circulation, arthritis, stress, low energy and a variety of skin disorders.

5. Breathe Deeply and Feel Better

Aromatherapy inhalation therapy is wonderful for calming the emotions and easing stress, but is also a curative treatment for chest and nasal congestion, sinusitis and bronchitis. Boil two cups of water and let it cool a few minutes before adding two to five drops of essential oil. Inhale the vapors deeply for five to ten minutes, two to three times a day. If you're on the go and need portable inhalation therapy, put two to four drops of essential oil on a handkerchief or tissue, and inhale deeply. Repeat this quick treatment as needed throughout the day. A few drops of essential oil on your pillow makes a simple inhalation treatment for insomnia.
