While often associated primarily with vegetables, the steam-cooking method can be used with almost any type of food, according to nutrition specialist Evelyn Crayton of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Steaming allows food to retain many of its nutrients, eliminates the needs for oils or other fats to cook the food and reduces the chance of an overcooked product. The steaming method works well with burgers, because it cuts back on cooking time and produces a juicy meat patty.
Clean and dry two empty 6-oz. tuna cans thoroughly.
Season 6 oz. of lean ground beef with salt, pepper or any other seasoning of your choice. Stuff the beef into one of the tuna cans. Fill the other tuna can halfway full with your choice of cheese.
Add 1 in. of water to the bottom of a double boiler. Put the boiler on the stove at medium heat until the water comes to a boil.
Put the tuna cans in the top half of the double boiler. Put the lid on the double boiler and steam the beef until thoroughly cooked, about five minutes.
Remove the double boiler from the heat.
Put the beef patty on a hamburger bun and pour the melted cheese on top of the beef. Dress the burger with your choice of condiments.
