Portable, economical and environmentally friendly, electric folding bikes are a viable option for commuters. When considering which electric folding bike is best for you, consider a variety of important factors. Before you start shopping, determine how you intend to use the bike. Will you benefit more from a bike that weighs little and can be packed into the trunk of a car, or one that has a longer range and higher top speed?

Full Size

Most electric folding bikes have small tires, which can make for a rough ride. However, those seeking full-size tires can still find an electric folding bike to suit their needs. Initially designed for military use, the Montague Paratrooper is a durable, full-size, 24-speed mountain bike with 26-inch tires. Weighing 30 pounds, the Paratrooper isn't too heavy on the wallet either at $800, as of May 2011. If you want a full-size, electric folding bike that isn't a mountain bike, another option is the Neo Velox. The Neo Velox is designed to handle like a regular bicycle. It uses standard wheels and weighs about 45 pounds.

Portable

If your priority is portability, the ultra-lightweight YikeBike might be the best option. The futuristic-looking YikeBike weighs 22 pounds and can be carried as a backpack. However, with a price tag of $4,000, as of May 2011, it won't be light on your wallet. Another lightweight option is the VeloMini, which weighs 32 pounds, costs $1,000 and fits into a carrying case.

Commuter

The best folding electric bikes for commuters include the Dahon Boost at 43 pounds and $2,500, as of May 2011, and the Brompton folding bike, which weighs 45 pounds and costs $2,565. These bikes both fold down easily in about 15 seconds. E-moto's Traveler is another option for commuters, folding up into half its size and featuring the lightest battery on the market. All of these bikes are equipped with 250-watt motors, providing an adequate range for most commuters.

Other Options

When choosing an electric folding bike, familiarize yourself with all its specifications to ensure you are getting a bike that is right for you. Price, top speed, range, charging time, weight and size when folded are all factors that can make an electric folding bike right for one person but a poor choice for another. In the end, personal preference will dictate the best bike for you.
