According to the Harvard Medical School, a person with a body weight of 125 lb. can burn 210 calories by rowing at a moderate pace for half an hour, whereas rope jumping for the same duration of time can burn 300 calories. Rope jumping is therefore more efficient for weight loss, but it has some inherent drawbacks that make rowing a more suitable option for many people.

Convenience

For some, rope jumping is the ultimate in convenience, because all you need is a skipping rope, comfortable clothing and a good pair of shoes. You can jump rope anywhere and it is an inexpensive pastime that can be very entertaining. A rowing machine requires some investment and free space in your home, if that is where you plan to use it. But once you make that commitment, a rowing machine can be effective in improving your overall fitness.

Impact on Joints

Rope jumping is a high-impact exercise that can be very challenging for older people and those with joint pain.
