When you have diabetes, your food choices and eating a balanced diet are important. Breakfast can set the trend for your entire day of eating. You want to eat a combination of food that keeps you satisfied and keeps your blood glucose under control. It's also a good idea to maintain healthy food choices since having diabetes puts you at an increased risk for developing other diseases.

Cereal

Cereal, especially ones that are high in fiber are an easy breakfast food. Certain cereals, like those that contain whole grain bran, are high in fiber and also rank low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index is a numerical scale that ranks food according to how it affects your glucose; the higher the ranking, the greater and faster the rise in your blood sugar. The high fiber content of bran is also satiating and can help keep you full until your next meal.

Waffles

Waffles are a good breakfast option if you have diabetes, as long as you choose the right kind. MayoClinic.com recommends choosing whole wheat waffles or pancakes paired with fruit. This combination provides a healthy source of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Breakfast Burrito

You can create a breakfast burrito by scrambling two egg whites with your favorite veggies, then topping them with low-fat cheese and placing them into a whole wheat tortilla. Eggs are a good source of omega fatty acids as well as protein. A whole wheat tortilla and veggies are the only carbs in this breakfast, so you are controlling your intake. Low-fat cheese adds some dairy with a small amount of fat.

Go Vegetarian

There are many breakfast alternatives that are made from soy. Soy bacon and sausage crumbles offer a healthier version to some of the breakfast meats you might crave. Scramble some tofu together with soy bacon for a high protein alternative to eggs and bacon. Add a piece of whole wheat toast and a glass of tomato juice for a well-balanced meal.
