Karate is a form of martial arts that focuses on much more than kicking and punching. Karate is an art that values discipline as well as movement forward, which can be illustrated through the belt system observed by many karate schools throughout the nation. One of the higher ranks demonstrated by this system is the purple belt, which signifies great achievement within karate, although the requirements might vary for obtaining the belt.
History
The colored belt system began in Japanese judo as a way to mark a student's progress as he grew in both knowledge and skill, but was later adapted by Sensei Gichin Funakoshi for karate. The karate colored belt practice started primarily in Shotokan karate schools but has branched out into other schools in varying forms throughout the United States and in many other areas of the world.
Belt Levels
Purple belts are part of a long line of colored belts that signify achievement in karate. It's important to note that not all karate schools use purple belts, but when they do the order from beginner to advanced typically runs: white, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, brown and black. You will notice that the colors advance from light to dark. This is because in the beginning of karate belt history, the belt remained the same but was dyed a darker color as students advanced.
Purple Belt Experience
Those who obtain a purple belt have shown ability to perform specific offensive and defensive techniques in karate. The techniques necessary to progress to a purple belt can vary depending on the school, but can include moves such as crushing or captured hammer, twirling wings, spinning kicks, lunge kicks or leaping crane. The student must demonstrate these skills with a high level of accuracy to pass the belt test and obtain her purple belt.
Other Possible Requirements
Someone with a purple belt also might have met other requirements based on the specific school attended. These could include written tests, oral tests, age requirements, memorization verses, or spending a specific amount of time as a student at the school the purple belt was awarded at.
