Breathing exercises, also known as pranayama, have been practiced for over 5,000 years. Breathing exercises can improve the health of your lungs and internal organs. Performing breathing exercises daily will give you the highest effectiveness of the benefits. Certain products like yoga props or aromatherapy oils can make your pranayama practice more comfortable and relaxing. See your doctor before practicing alternative medicine.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils for the benefit of your health. Aromatherapy is often used to positively affect the mood, ease aches and pains and treat skin conditions. When used with breathing exercises, aromatherapy can enhance your breathing experience by helping you relax. Use a small amount in an oil burner during your pranayama practice. Essential oils are available at health food stores.

Yoga Props

Yoga props such as bolsters, blankets or blocks can be used to assist you in your pranayama practice. Next time you practice pranayama, try laying face up with a yoga bolster under your shoulder blades and a yoga block under your head. Relax with your arms naturally at your sides with your palms facing up. These products are available at any yoga supply store.

Eyebag

An eyebag is a product used to cover and relax your eyes. Usually filled with sand, grains or beans, eyebags are heavier than a simple eye cover. Some eyebags are infused with essential oils and made with gentle and comfortable fabric. Eyebags help relax the optic nerves and assist you in being able to fully focus on your breathing exercises. Eyebags are usually available at spas or massage supply stores.

Neti Pot

A neti pot is a ceramic pot with a long spout used to cleanse your sinuses. Mixed with warm water and a small amount of salt, regular use of a neti pot will keep your sinuses clear, lessen pressure in your eyes and reduce accumulation of pollutants. This will help deepen and stimulate your pranayama practice, according to author and yoga teacher Mukunda Stiles. Neti pots are available at health food stores.
