Golf is a very complex sport, and all golfers want to perform at their best, regardless of ability. Swing speed is very important for long distance, but without proper fundamentals in the golf swing, even the hardest attempts at generating swing speed can be futile. Correcting mechanics and positions will lead to a "slower" swing, but will actually speed up the driver head. Doing so increases ball speed, and ultimately, distance and power.
Swing Slow And Speed Up Your Driver
Step 1
Set up to the ball perfectly. Make sure the ball is placed just inside your left heel and that your left arm and wrist are completely linear at address. Poor setup fundamentals are a main cause of distance loss.
Step 2
Hinge your wrists up and down on the takeaway, never from side to side. Entering into the toe-up position early in the takeaway is key to generating more power with a slower driver swing.
Step 3
Extend your arms fully away from your body on the back swing. Your left arm should be completely straight, while your right arm should extend but should have some flex in the elbow.
Step 4
Reach for the sky at the top of the back swing. You should feel a pull in your forearms and wrists.
Step 5
Swing slowly down towards the ball, making sure to accelerate. Let the club do the work for you. Rely on your body strength -- with the arms, legs and hips working together to create torque -- and the natural makeup of the golf club.
Step 6
Accelerate rapidly through the ball just before impact. While this will result in an overall "slower" swing speed, the contact and angle of attack will be improved. The driver will speed up and you will hit the ball more solidly, resulting in more distance.
Step 7
Swing through to a full finish. This step is lost on some golfers. A full turn -- both back and through -- is necessary to complete the ideal golf swing.
Tips and Warnings
- Returning the club face to the square position, as best you can, will result in straighter golf shots. Slowing down your swing will result in faster ball speed and club head speed, if done properly, leading to increased distance and accuracy.
- Despite swinging slower, make sure you accelerate throughout the swing. De-acceleration is a main cause of poor contact and power loss in the swing.
