When preparing for a day on your favorite snowboard slope, you will need to compile a list of the essential gear. Wearing the appropriate snowboarding attire will allow you to maintain a comfortable body temperature. Donning the necessary safety gear will prevent serious injuries in the event of a fall or collision with a fellow rider.

Snowboard

The board itself is quite possibly the most important item on the snowboarding checklist. Choosing a snowboard that matches your riding terrain will enable you to maintain control during high-speed turns and maneuvers. Hold the snowboard vertically in front of you while standing in a stationary position. The length of the snowboard should roughly correspond with the height of your chin. While wider snowboards provide increased stability, they decrease your maneuverability. The snowboard features two lightweight bindings that secure your feet in place.

Boots

Boots come in a variety of styles to accommodate the numerous skill levels of avid snowboarders. Entry-level snowboarding boots are equipped with internal pads made of high-density foam. Beginner boots allow your ankles to flex as you practice the basic turns and maneuvers. According to the Snowboards.net Buying Guide, midlevel boots feature a slimmed-down design that helps to increase snowboard response. High-end snowboarding boots are often equipped with an integrated lacing system that features an adjustment knob.

Helmet

No matter what discipline of snowboarding you prefer, even the most minor of falls can lead to damaging head trauma. The best snowboarding helmets feature a lightweight construction that does not hinder the movement of your head. The outer shell of the snowboarding helmet often features a carbon fiber or fiberglass construction. The interior of the snowboarding helmet is lined with cushioned pads for increased comfort and protection. According to "Snowboard" magazine, top-rated helmets feature a ventilation system to keep your head dry.

Clothing

Snowboard clothing allows you to remain warm and dry throughout the day. Snowboarding pants and jackets are constructed out of tightly woven materials including nylon and polyester. Snowboard attire features a breathable design to prevent perspiration from accumulating against your skin. The seams of the snowboarding pants and jackets are lined with waterproof tape. To prevent ice crystals and particles of snow from hindering your vision, wear a pair of snowboarding goggles. Top-rated goggles feature interchangeable lenses so you can swap in different colored lenses for changing light situations.
