Detox diets, also knows as cleanses, are done with the intention of removing harmful substances and toxins from the body. Such toxins are taken into the body on a daily basis from the foods we eat, what we drink, the air we breathe in and chemical-laden products in our environments. An accumulation of harmful substances over time may lead to lethargy, weakness, weight gain or serious health risks. Consult with a physician to determine if a detox diet is appropriate for you and be sure to implement healthy eating strategies for optimal health gains.
Fruits and Vegetables
A healthy detox diet should consist predominately of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables. Produce is low in calories, has little to no fat and no added sugars. These foods are a source of essential vitamins and minerals that aid in normal body functions including that of the liver and kidneys which filter out harmful substances from the body. Fruits and vegetables are also high in antioxidants which help prevent certain cancers and heart disease. Include antioxidant-rich artichokes, broccoli, tomatoes and berries into your daily minimum goal of five to 10 servings of produce while detoxing.
Organic
It is essential to purchase the cleanest foods you possibly can during your detox. Most foods have added pesticides, hormones, antibiotics or other chemicals for maximum growth and longevity. However, these chemicals are harmful to your health. Select organic produce, meats and dairy products when possible. If unable to purchase organic produce, be sure to thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables with water and some dish liquid to remove as many toxins as possible prior to consumption.
Water
Water is an essential aspect of a detox diet. It has no calories, no fat and no sugars. Although it also has no nutrients, it keeps the body hydrated which fends off fatigue and feelings of hunger during detoxes that leave you craving foods high in sugar and fat. Water is also essential for a healthy digestive system as it aids in pushing food and waste materials through the digestive tract for elimination. Consume at least eight glasses of water daily, or more depending on your activity levels and individual needs.
Fiber
A healthy detox diet should include foods that will assist in the functioning of a healthy digestive system. Undigested foods and materials that accumulate in the digestive tract often lead to digestive upsets such as constipation, flatulence and bloating. Fibrous foods aid in pushing food materials through the digestive system and bulking up stools for effective elimination. Fiber is found in complex carbohydrates including fruits and vegetables, whole-grain bread, brown rice, quinoa and oatmeal.
