Dr. Arthur Agatston formulated the South Beach Diet, a plan that focuses on low-fat proteins and the right carbohydrates. The plan breaks down into three phases, each with certain food requirements to help you reach or maintain your goal weight. Prior to starting a program such as the South Beach Diet, talk with your doctor. She will help you understand the restrictions on eating, and if the weight loss claims may apply to you.
Phase 1
The first phase of the South Beach Diet is a two week period that requires you to eliminate all carbohydrates and sugars, including all fruits and certain vegetables, such as carrots. Dr. Agatston states that by avoiding these foods, you will eliminate your cravings for sugary snacks and "bad" carbs such as those found in processed foods. In the two weeks of this first phase, Dr. Agatston states that you should lose between 8 and 10 pounds. He also states that most of this weight should come from your mid-section.
Final Goal
You follow the second phase of the diet from the beginning of the third week until your reach your weight loss goal. The time frame depends on the rate at which you lose weight, your commitment to the plan and how much weight you have to lose. During this phase, the South Beach Diet teaches you how to select healthy carbs, such as whole grains, and focus on lean proteins. Dr. Agatston states that following the guidelines for the second phase of the plan can help you reach your healthy goal weight.
Maintenance
You begin the third, and final, phase of the diet once you meet your weight loss goal. This phase is not designed for weight loss, but to help you maintain your weight. You can choose to eat any food, but you must do so in moderation, while also keeping in mind the healthful lesson in carbohydrates, proteins and fat learned in the first two phases of the plan. If you gain weight during the maintenance phase, Dr. Agatston notes that you should ideally return to phase 1. If you do not return to your ideal weight at the end of the first phase, continue following the second phase until you reach your goal again.
Considerations
Even though some people may find weight loss success with the South Beach Diet, this plan may not work for everyone. You also need to consider the restrictive nature this low-carb diet, particularly the first two weeks of the plan and whether you feel you can commit to avoiding carbs and sugars for this length of time. Your doctor can help you evaluate the claims of the South Beach Diet, along with a variety of other plans, to determine which seems most appropriate for your own weight loss goals.
