Some protein bars can help support your athletic endeavors, but the nutritional profile varies greatly from bar to bar. One of the most significant differences that can help you decide between protein bars is the protein content. Protein can help you build muscle, and research from the October 2009 issue of the journal "Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases" found that high-protein diets can also help you lose fat. MedlinePlus suggests consuming 50 g to 65 g of protein daily; more than that is considered a high-protein diet.

BSN Syntha-6 Decadence Bars

BSN Syntha-6 Decadence Bars are meal replacement bars that are rich in protein and carbohydrates to promote muscle gain, as well as specialized fatty acids that may help you lose fat. The Syntha-6 Decadence Bars provide 350 calories and 30 g of protein, which is more than most bars, which provide 10 to 20 g of protein. Syntha-6 Decadence bars also offer 44 g of carbohydrates and 9 g of fat. Some of these fats come from medium-chain triglycerides, a type of fatty acids that research from the January 2003 issue of the "International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders" found could increase fat burning and calorie burning. These bars are high in sugar, with 13 g per bar, and saturated fat, with 7 g.

Detour Lower Sugar Bar

As the name indicates, Detour's Lower Sugar Bar is a reformulation of its original bar, albeit with just 5 g of sugar. Each bar contains 2 g of fiber, although most of the carbohydrates, 27 g, come from sugar alcohols. Sugar alcohols don't cause tooth decay like sugar, but they may cause a laxative effect if consumed in large quantities. Detour Lower Sugar Bars provide 30 g of protein, which is about half of the daily intake suggested by MedlinePlus.

Allmax Nutrition Isoflex Triple Layer Protein Isolate Bars

Allmax Nutrition Isoflex protein bars are rich in protein, with 30 g in each 330-calorie bar. These bars contain 1 g of sugar and 1 g of fiber, with a majority of the carbohydrates coming from sugar alcohols. Isoflex triple layer protein isolate bars contain 11 g of fat, with 5 g of saturated fat. These bars contain a blend of whey protein and casein, a combination that research from the August 2006 edition of the "Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research" found promotes better muscle recovery than whey protein alone.

Met-Rx Big 100 Bars

Met-Rx Big 100 bars are not only high in protein, with 31 g per bar, but also high in calories, with 410, which is 20.5 percent of the daily suggested intake of 2,000 calories. These bars have some nutritional benefits, such as the 4 g of fiber, but the bars also contain 28 g of sugar. The Met-Rx Big 100 bars are high in fat, with 13 g per bar, but only 4.5 g comes from saturated fat. Met-Rx Big 100 bars do provide at least 30 percent of the daily suggested intake of several vitamins and minerals, such as vitamins A, C and E, as well as zinc and copper.
