In the game of basketball, a violation is defined as a rule infraction. The difference between a violation and a foul is that a foul involves physical contact between two players while a violation does not. When a violation occurs, the ball is typically awarded to the opposing team. The governing body for your basketball league should clearly define what constitutes a violation in the rule book.

Goaltending

Referees call a goaltending violation any time a player on the defensive team interferes with the shot of an offensive player. The goaltending violation occurs when a player on defense comes in contact with the ball as it is making its downward move toward the basket or while the ball is on the rim. Alternatively, a goaltending call can be made when a defensive player touches the net or rim while the ball is in the process of being shot.

Double Dribble

There are variations on the double dribble violation. The most commonly called double dribble violation occurs when a player dribbling the ball stops dribbling to hold on to the ball and then begins dribbling again. A double dribble can also occur when a player uses both of his hands to dribble the ball at the same time.

Backcourt Violation

The backcourt violation, which is also known as the over and back violation, is another that can occur in two separate situations. The first violation is called when a player has possession of the ball on the frontcourt and passes it to a teammate who is still located in the backcourt. A backcourt violation can also occur when a player crosses the line at midcourt while in possession of the ball and enters the backcourt before passing the ball to another teammate.

Out-of-Bounds

An out-of-bounds call can be made on either a player who has possession of the ball or on the ball itself. A player with the ball is declared out of bounds when any body part makes physical contact with the court or another object that is located on or outside the boundary line. The basketball is declared out of bounds when it contacts a player, object or a section of the floor that is outside of the boundary line. In this situation, the last inbound player who touched the ball is considered responsible for the call and the opposing team is awarded the ball.
