Garlic bread works well as an appetizer or as a complement to hearty meals. Classically, it's served with Italian fare. You can alter the flavor slightly, depending on whether you make it on a grill or in the oven. You can add any number of toppings, from cheese to tomato and basil to prosciutto, but the one essential add-on is some form of garlic. Save time by using powdered garlic.
Step 1
Slice your bread into 1-inch-thick pieces. Use a loaf with a hard crust, such as French or Italian bread.
Step 2
Spread a thin coat of butter or margarine on the face of each slice. If you like, sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the butter. Use just enough cheese to cover the buttered area lightly.
Step 3
Add a dusting of garlic powder over the cheese. The more garlic you add, the stronger the flavor will be after the bread cooks. If you overdo the garlic, scrape off the butter and reapply all ingredients.
Step 4
Preheat the oven to broil. Lay the prepared slices out in a single layer on a baking sheet. Place the tray on the broiler rack of your oven and bake until the bread turns browns around the edges. It should only take a few minutes. If grilling, lay the pieces out on the low heat side of the grill and cook for 3 to 5 minutes or until the bread browns.
