Vitamin D3 is a synthesized form of vitamin D the body creates from exposure to ultraviolet-B, or UVB, sunlight. This compound is essential in the formation and maintenance of strong bones as it helps the body absorb calcium. Additionally, vitamin D may also help protect you from osteoporosis, hypertension and even allergies, although further research is necessary. Never use vitamin D in place of medication or the advice of your doctor. If your allergies are severe or you show signs of a vitamin deficiency, seek the appropriate medical attention.

Step 1

Go outside for five to 30 minutes between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at least twice a week. According to the Office of Dietary Supplements, sun exposure to the face, arms, legs or back usually leads to sufficient vitamin D3 synthesis. Vitamin D-deficient children are 2.3 times more likely to have allergies to oak and 2.4 times more likely to be allergic to peanuts, according to Live Science. Youths with low levels of this vitamin are more susceptible to food and environmental allergies. Regular outside play may reduce the risk.

Step 2

Avoid sunbathing behind glass as UVB rays cannot penetrate the material. A September 2010 article published in the "Journal of Clinical Investigation" found that vitamin D helps reduce the allergic response to the common environmental mold Aspergillus fumigatus in asthmatics and cystic fibrosis sufferers.

Step 3

Eat foods containing vitamin D to supplement sun exposure, especially if you're prone to sunburn. SPF 8 or higher will block vitamin D-producing rays, although people usually don't apply enough or fail to cover the whole body with the sunblock, which results in vitamin D3 synthesis. Nonetheless, foods like fortified whole-grain cereal, lean meats and fatty fish are healthy means of meeting your daily requirement. For adults, the daily recommended amount is 100 mcg.
