Heading out to the trail for a hiking trip is an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and majestic scenery. As you prepare for the hiking trip, include specific gear and equipment in your backpack to ensure a safe, successful and enjoyable experience. Your list of equipment includes core items such as first aid, food, clothing and a sleeping system along with additional personal items.

First Aid

The most important items in your backpack are the first aid and emergency items. While these items may be used sparingly, they can save your life in an emergency situation. Start with a basic first aid kit that includes bandages, blister care, pain relievers and personal medications. Additional first aid and emergency items include a topographic map of the area, compass or GPS, flashlight with extra batteries, knife or multi-tool, sun protection and fire starters.

Food and Water

Hiking requires a significant amount of energy that burns calories all day. So always carry food and water items in your backpack. Dried food items such as trail mix, energy bars and jerky are simple snacks that provide a high number of calories with minimal weight. You can also carry a backpacking stove, cooking system and mess kit to prepare hot meals or boil water for coffee or oatmeal. Use a water purifier or filter and carry the water in plastic bottles or a hydration bladder system.

Sleeping System

Multi-day hiking trips require a sleeping system that accounts for the majority of the weight in your backpack. The sleeping system includes a tent, sleeping bag and sleeping pad with additional items such as a bivy sack or camp pillow. Choose a tent size that matches the number of people in your party to eliminate any added weight. Match the sleeping bag to the anticipated weather conditions. For example, don't carry a bag rated for sub-zero temperatures if you're hiking in the middle of the summer.

Clothing

Your clothing is another important consideration for your hiking trip. Along with the clothes that you wear, carry additional clothing in your backpack. Choose lightweight, synthetic materials that dry quickly. Additional clothing items for your backpack include rainwear, socks and insulated clothing. Match the clothing to the terrain and weather patterns of your area. For example, carry an extra hat for sun protection if you're hiking in the summer and carry additional insulating layers if you're hiking in the winter.
