Qigong, also spelled Qi Gong by some practitioners, is an ancient Chinese martial art and health care system dating back to 2500 BC, according to Qigong expert Garri Garripoli in his book, "Qigong: Essence of the Healing Dance." In Qigong, different body parts are linked to different mental and physical functions. An imbalance of Qi in an organ can result in poor health and sickness. Certain exercises are used to cleanse and restore the proper functioning of your liver.

Qigong Liver Functions

Chinese medicine recognizes many important mental and physical functions of your liver. The liver is associated with physical functions such as bile secretion and flow and detoxifying your blood. The amount of Qi in your liver is related to the amount of blood in your liver, according to Shoshanna Katzman in her book, "Qigong for Staying Young." In addition to the physical functions, the liver is also responsible for several mental and emotional functions. The liver is seen as the site of stored anger and frustration, as well as positive qualities such as kindness and forgiveness.

Spinning Wheel

The Spinning Wheel Qigong exercise promotes liver cleansing by improving the flow of Qi in your liver and spleen. To perform this exercise, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Keep your knees bent. Hold a Qigong ball in each hand, with your hands resting in front of your pelvis, palms rotated toward the ceiling. Keep your hands together and use your hands and arms to make a big circle in front of your body, as though you are following the movements of a large clock on the wall. Inhale when you come to the bottom of the circle and exhale as you come to the top.

Healing Sound for Liver

According to author Katzmann, the Qigong Healing Sound for Liver helps detoxify and releases heat from your liver. To perform this exercise, stand with your feet hip-width apart. Make a fist with your hands and cross your arms at the wrists in front of your body, with your arms pointing straight down toward the floor. Inhale and raise your arms over your head, keeping them crossed. Then, open your arms out to the sides and lower them down. Cross your arms again at the wrists in front of your body. Bend your elbows and bring them close to your ribcage on either side of your body. Bend over slowly and begin exhaling, making the sound, "Shuuu," with your breath. Return to your starting position and repeat three times.

Liver Detox Self Massage

The liver self-massage can be used to detoxify your liver and release negative, pent-up emotions from this area, according to Chinese medical practitioner and Qigong instructor Kay Hutchinson in an article for SelfGrowth.com. To perform this technique, rest your hands on the area just below your right rib cage. Slowly massage the area using circular motions in a counter-clockwise direction for about three minutes. Breathe deeply and picture your hands releasing cool energy into your liver.
