Asparagus works with a variety of preparation methods, including grilling, roasting and steaming. If you want your green vegetables on the table quickly, the microwave is a simple way to cook asparagus. Adding water to the asparagus while you microwave it creates a steaming effect in a much shorter time. This cooking method also keeps the kitchen cool compared to stove-top preparation or cooking the asparagus in the oven. Check the asparagus frequently so it doesn't become mushy.

Step 1

Rinse the asparagus pieces under water. Shake off the excess water, and place the asparagus on a cutting board. Cut off the bottom 1/2 inch of each stalk to get rid of the hard, dry section.

Step 2

Arrange the asparagus stalks in a microwave-safe dish, and pour 1/4 cup water in the dish. Drizzle the lemon juice over the asparagus. Season the asparagus to taste with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Cut the butter into small pieces and place it on top of the vegetables.

Step 3

Cover the dish with plastic wrap. Leave an area of plastic wrap open for the steam to escape.

Step 4

Cook the asparagus on the high setting of the microwave for three minutes. Lift back the plastic wrap, watching for steam. Taste a small piece of asparagus or poke with a fork to determine if they are done cooking.

Step 5

Stir the asparagus gently if it isn't done cooking. Microwave for another two to three minutes and check the asparagus again. Cook for short time periods if it needs additional cooking to avoid mushiness.

Tips and Warnings

  • An alternative cooking method is to wrap the asparagus pieces in a dampened paper towel. Microwave as you would with the asparagus in a dish. Change the seasonings to match your taste.
