To many, the gym is a haven where they can escape the rigors of daily life. Stress and distractions from the outside world should be checked at the door when you step inside. Here, you focus instead on your body and health. The gym offers many options to get active and provides a variety of facilities and equipment that most would otherwise not have access to.

Working Out

For most gym members, the gym is the place they go to get in their workouts. The primary idea behind the gym is that it serves as an environment for you to perform a series of exercises. In general, a workout routine can incorporate free weights, machines and cardiovascular machines, such as treadmills and elliptical trainers.

Classes

Most gyms offer their members a variety of fitness classes, such as step aerobics, cycling and yoga. The classes are led by certified instructors that help guide you in correctly performing a particular activity. They also serve to inspire and motivate you to perform at your best. Typically, classes revolve around aerobic-based activities but often incorporate anaerobic elements.

Equipment

One advantage of belonging to a gym is the variety of equipment from which you can choose. Most people don't have access to such a large selection of free weights, machines or cardiovascular equipment. The gym makes it possible for you to try out new ways of exercising, which can help you reach your fitness goals.

Swimming Pools

Certain gyms feature swimming pools. Swimming is an effective low-impact aerobic exercise that also helps you strengthen and tone your muscles. Gyms with pools often feature water aerobics classes, which are open to all gym members. The pools at gyms should be used for fitness purposes and not for recreational activity.

Saunas and Steam Rooms

Gyms commonly have saunas and steam rooms available for their members. Saunas and steam rooms can be used after a workout or on their own to relax and sweat. Be sure you check your gym's sauna and steam room policies before using it.

Basketball Courts

If lifting weights or running in place on a treadmill gets boring for you, take advantage of your gym's basketball court, if one is on hand. Playing basketball is a good way to break up the monotony that is often associated with going to the gym. Many gyms set up their own leagues and teams to make playing more fun. It's also a way to meet other gym members.

Racquetball

Some gyms feature racquetball courts. Much like basketball, playing racquetball is an ideal way to break up your normal gym routine and do something new. Racquetball is a high-intensity sport that can help develop you aerobic fitness. It's also a good way to meet other gym members.
