A warm fried pie, oozing sweet fruit filling, makes a fitting end to a summer picnic or a sweet breakfast treats. Southern cooks made fried pies with dried fruit that was easy to keep through the winter, allowing them to enjoy this favorite fruit dessert year-round. Place the filling in a circle of sturdy pie crust or flattened biscuit dough, fold over and seal and fry in hot vegetable oil. Sprinkle the finished pie with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar and enjoy hot or cold.

Step 1

Chop the dried fruit into small pieces, about ½ inches wide.

Step 2

Place the chopped fruit in a saucepan with 1 cup water. Turn the burner on low and simmer for 30 minutes, or until fruit is very tender. Remove pot from heat.

Step 3

Allow the fruit to cool. Mash it with the potato masher. The fruit will not be smooth, but still contain pieces.

Step 4

Stir in the sugar and spices.
