If you commute to work every day on your bike, you want to make sure you have the right tires for the ride. Your choice of tire will depend on the weather, the surfaces on which you ride and other factors such as the ability to grip the road on sharp turns. There is no one tire that is perfect for all commutes.
Weather
If you commute through all weather conditions, including snow, you want knobbie tires for extra traction. If ice is involved, you also want studs to prevent sliding. Those who live in warmer climates or only commute during good weather can use slick tires. If you're a daily commuter, keep an eye on the weather forecast so you know which tires will get you to your destination safely.
Terrain
If you're riding exclusively on asphalt, slicks are the best tire. Slicks maximize your speed for less effort. However, if you expect to encounter dirt or gravel, you might want the extra support provided by knobbie tires. Slicks are fast but efficient only on smooth surfaces. Semi-slicks provide more support while cornering than plain slicks, and inverted tread tires work if you ride on a rough road or occasionally off road.
Brands
Continental tires are known for ability to resist punctures, durability and ability to grip the road. Another recognized brand with regard to durability is the Panaracer Pasela TourGuard tire. Choose a brand with a Kevlar lining if you're worried about punctures. If you're unsure which brand to choose, visit your local bike shop and talk to an expert about your specific needs.
Maintenance
No matter the tire, make sure the edges of the tread are sharp. When they become worn down, the bike will handle badly and you may be susceptible to flat tires. Also, make sure you keep your tires filled within their preferred air-pressure range. Overinflated tires provide less stability but more speed, while inflating your tires less will give you more traction but can cause flats from a pinched inner tube.
