The first thing to understand about finding the discipline to exercise is that you can easily over-discipline yourself. Creating goals that are too lofty is a fast way to break any good habits and beat yourself up in the process. Believing yourself "lazy" for not exercising is a good way to chase away any good habits before they start. The key to exercise is encouragement --- and it starts with you.
Step 1
Make attainable goals. Don't tell yourself you are going to exercise every day from now on if you haven't already been exercising almost every day. Set goals you know you can reach. Pick two or three days in the week when going to the gym is easy --- either on weekends or light work days.
Step 2
Join a gym. Putting a financial payment into your exercise will encourage you to keep your commitment. Find a gym that has the equipment and amenities you are looking for and fits easily into your price range.
Step 3
Hire a trainer. It's one thing to start an exercise routine, but it's another to know exactly how to exercise to get the results you want. Many people give up on exercising because they have very specific goals but do not know how to reach them. Losing weight, gaining certain muscle mass and flattening your stomach all require different types of exercise --- and a trainer can get you the results you want fast.
Step 4
Get an exercise buddy. Staying motivated with any kind of exercise routine is always easier when you have a friend to keep you accountable. Plus, going to the gym alone can be intimidating. But with friends --- it's fun.
