Most foods should be consumed in moderation to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, but there are several foods you should make an effort to steer completely clear of while grocery shopping. Foods high in unhealthy fat, sugars, and artificial additives increase a person's risk of a wide variety of debilitating and potentially fatal diseases.
Bacon
Bacon is high in saturated fats. Saturated fat raises the level of cholesterol in the blood thus increasing one's risk of heart disease and stroke. An individual who consumes bacon every day is estimated to increase their risk of heart disease by 42 percent and diabetes by 19 percent. Over-consumption of bacon has also been linked to an increased risk for lung disease and decreased lung function.
Ice Cream and Doughnuts
Ice cream is one of the world's most favorite delights, but it is also ridden with sugar, trans fats, and artificial ingredients. The artificial colors and flavorings contain a number of neurotoxins, which have a number of adverse effects on the brain and nervous system. Doughnuts are filled with artificial additives, loads of sugar, artificial dough conditioners and are fried in trans fat. One doughnut has 30 to 40 percent trans fat and contains around 300 calories.
Soda
Soda is extremely high in sugar, caffeine, calories, artificial colorings and sulphides. Furthermore, the acid content of soda makes it especially hard on the kidneys. Diet soda in particular contains a number of artificial ingredients that are toxic to the body. Diet soda most notoriously contains aspartame, which has been linked to anxiety attacks, birth defects, binge eating, learning disabilities, headaches, migraines, hearing loss, heart palpitations, reproductive problems and a host of other harmful effects.
Hot Dogs
Hot dogs contain nitrite preservatives, which form carcinogenic compounds during the heating process. These preservatives have been linked to childhood cancer and brain tumors in infants. Hot dogs and other cured meats have also been linked to pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer. Furthermore, when unhealthy toppings like caramelized onions, sour cream, and chili are added, hot dogs become even higher in calories and fat.
