While the humble hamburger patty can be tasty, it can also be full of fat. Although broiling your burger is a good way to reduce the fat content of various types of ground meat, starting with ground sirloin or ground round, or hamburger that has a fat content of three to five percent, reduces the meat's shrinkage and is, in the long run, more economical. Additionally, the careful selection of seasonings can prevent your burger from becoming dry during broiling as well as increase its flavor.

Step 1

Add the hamburger to a mixing bowl.

Step 2

Mix in seasonings or leave them out if you prefer your burger to have more of a "hamburger" taste. Although seasonings can be any you choose, limit the amount of liquid seasonings to avoid a mushy burger that falls apart during broiling. Consider a chopped onion, garlic powder, dry mustard, black pepper or even a sprinkling of Italian seasoning. Liquid seasoning options include Worcestershire sauce, horseradish or a little ketchup. If after mixing your hamburger looks mushy or has too much liquid, firm it up with a sprinkling of bread crumbs.

Step 3

Shape the meat mixture into hamburger patties. Use about ¼ lb. hamburger for each patty.

Step 4

Arrange them on a broiler pan so that there is a small space between each burger.

Step 5

Move the upper rack in your oven so that it is 3 to 4 inches from the heating element.

Step 6

Set your oven to "Broil," or if your oven has a separate broiler section, set the control to "Broil." Allow the oven to heat before placing the broiler pan in the oven or broiler.

Step 7

Broil the burgers for a total of eight to 12 minutes, depending on whether you want a medium or well-done burger. Ensure even broiling by using a spatula to rotate the burgers 90 degrees after they have broiled for two to three minutes. Let the burgers broil for another two to three minutes, then flip and broil for an additional two to three minutes. Rotate the burgers one more time before a final two- to three-minute broil.

Step 8

Remove the burgers from your broiler and use a spatula to transfer them to a serving platter.
