What Kind Of Gear Do You Wear When You Play Pop Warner Football?

Pop Warner is the largest youth football organization in the country. The organization affords kids an opportunity to participate in team sports in a safe, structured environment. Teams in each of the age divisions provide the mandatory tackle football gear that players wear during practices and games. Your gear is issued upon the team's receipt of a parental consent form.

Helmet and Mouthpiece

Team managers measure the crown of each player's head for a hard plastic football helmet. The manager outfits the helmets with the correct size jawbone and temple pads for a particular player. All helmets have a face guard and a chin strap. You are responsible for providing your own mouthpiece, which is mandatory under Pop Warner rules.

Pads

The set of shoulder pads you wear resemble those used by high school, college and professional football players. The equipment manager selects the size according to your shoulders and upper body. First-year players are shown how to lace the pads in front and tighten the underarm straps. In addition, you are issued an elastic girdle that provides hipbone and tailbone protection. Players can wear their own T-shirt and underpants under the pads for added comfort. Knee pads fit into pockets on the inside of your football pants.

Uniforms

Each player receives practice pants and a practice jersey, along with game pants and a game jersey. Practice and game pants have a web belt that easily adjusts to your waist. It's your responsibility make sure your football pants and jerseys are clean and in good condition. Launder your uniform with detergent and avoid using bleach. Always tell the equipment manager if your uniform does not fit correctly or is damaged. You will be given another jersey or pair of pants that fits and is in good condition. Your game uniform cannot be worn during practice.

Football Shoes and Cleats

Pop Warner teams do not provide your football shoes and socks but allow you to wear any style of shoe that you like. You have the choice of high-top, mid-cut, or low-cut football shoes with molded or detachable cleats. Some players like the feel of an extra pair of socks, which can improve the fit of their football shoes. Your coach will most likely instruct you to clean and polish your shoes and launder the laces before games.
