How to Take Dandruff Out of Very Thick Hair

Dandruff is typically caused by a skin disorder known as seborrheic dermatitis. This disorder causes the skin to become inflamed, itchy and flake off. If you have very thick hair, it may seem difficult to remove, since the scalp may be harder to access. Aggressive treatment can help you get rid of the condition quickly and effectively. If your dandruff becomes an ongoing problem, speak with your doctor.

Step 1

Choose an over-the-counter dandruff shampoo. According to the Mayo Clinic, dandruff shampoos with any of the following active ingredients can help get rid of dandruff for your thick hair: salicylic acid, tar, ketoconazole, selenium sulfide, ciclopirox or pyrithione zinc. Some dandruff shampoo producers include Head and Shoulders, Selsun Blue and Neutrogena.

Step 2

Use the dandruff shampoo once daily during your initial treatment. Once you notice a reduction of symptoms, reduce the number of times that you use the shampoo to approximately three times a week.

Step 3

Apply the dandruff shampoo to your entire head of hair. Part the hair in small sections and use the shampoo on each small section before moving onto the next. Since your hair is thick, you may need to use a larger amount than recommended on the bottle to cover the area. Leave the shampoo on your head without rinsing for approximately three to five minutes.

Step 4

Rinse the dandruff shampoo completely out of your hair and scalp. Avoid scratching or touching the scalp after you have rinsed your hair. This can cause the release of scales that may be difficult to remove from your thick hair.
