Ready-made pizza crusts are a godsend for busy families who want a quick and nutritious homemade meal. Homemade sausage pizza is a good choice, because you can opt for leaner, less-salty turkey sausage and can add healthy vegetables like green peppers and tomatoes. You can also use reduced-fat mozzarella cheese to help keep that calorie count down. Making sausage pizza is something that the kids can help with, making it as much an adventure as it is a meal.

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 375 degrees F. and spray a pizza pan or baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place the ready-made crust onto the greased pan.

Step 2

Pour ¼ cup of olive oil into a small bowl. Add 1 tsp. each of basil, oregano and parsley to the olive oil and stir it well. Use a pastry brush to spread the ready-made pizza crust with the spiced olive oil.

Step 3

Spoon enough tomato sauce onto the crust to cover it, but not so much that it will make the pizza soggy. Spread it around with the back of the spoon to ensure even coverage.

Step 4

Sprinkle a layer of grated mozzarella cheese over the sauce. A little cheese goes a long way, so if you are watching calories and saturated fat, remember that the cheese is a flavoring, not a main ingredient.

Step 5

Layer cooked sausage on top of the cheese, making sure that it is distributed evenly all over the pizza.

Step 6

Place chopped green pepper and chopped tomatoes on top of the sausage to add a little color and a bit of extra nutrition.

Step 7

Bake the pizza for 15 to 20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  • Add kalamata olives for an extra bit of spice.
