Lap Band Stomach Surgery Qualifications

Laparoscopic gastric banding is a surgical procedure for weight loss. The surgery is a method of treating obesity in individuals. The procedure works by applying a band around the upper portion of the stomach which reduces stomach capacity as well as the opening to the stomach. Weight is lost due to the reduced size of the stomach. The individual no longer requires a large amount of food to feel full. There are specific guidelines that must be met to be a candidate for this procedure.

Obesity

The first and most obvious qualification that needs to be met is to evaluate the level of obesity the patient is suffering from. According to the Centers for Disease Control, obesity is calculated by using the height and weight to figure the body mass index. The CDC indicates that a BMI of 30 or greater would indicate obesity.

Mental Status

Candidates for lap band surgery will usually have to undergo a mental health evaluation to make sure that they are mentally stable enough to endure not only the procedure but the after effects of the surgery.

Lifestyle

The type of lifestyle the potential candidate is leading will help determine whether they will qualify for the procedure. Behaviors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, and exercise will all play a part in determining if the patient will be a successful candidate. Other factors such as stress level and support structure may be reviewed as well.

Compliant

Before authorizing a lap band surgery, the physician will meet with the patient and review past medical records to determine whether the individual will be able to maintain compliancy with the requirements of the surgery. There are procedures and tasks that will need to be completed both preoperatively and postoperatively. Whether or not the individual is compliant with the physician's orders will have a direct correlation to the potential success of the surgery.

Failure of Conservative Methods

Candidates for Lap Band placement have generally tried several conservative methods for weight loss. Surgery is considered a last resort due to the invasiveness and potential for serious complications. These individuals have often tried such methods as behavior modification, dietary changes, exercise programs and sometimes medications. Once these options have been exhausted and unsuccessful, the patient may be considered as a candidate for the procedure.
