How to Organize Free Weights

Work out at home with free weights long enough, and you'll eventually amass quite a pile as you progress. While the growing mound of metal is a reminder of how far you've come, it's also prone to becoming an awful mess with missing weights if you don't keep everything organized. Rather than letting the weights creep out into the middle of your floor, keep them lined up and ready to use.

Step 1

Place the weights off to the side of your workout area, away from other equipment so you don't trip over any part of the weights or the rack. Keep all the weights accessible, though, as you'll have to dust them occasionally. Hiding little-used weights in a hard-to-reach nook is an invitation for bugs and dust bunnies to crawl and float into that corner.

Step 2

Set the weights on a sturdy rack or on the floor. Do not set them on floor vents or near the edge of steps. Use a locking cabinet if you have curious children who could trip over or roll weights into high-traffic areas. Do not set them on tables; the weights could roll off and hurt your foot or any children or animals that happen to wander under the table's edge at the wrong moment.

Step 3

Line up the weights by weight--this will either be printed on the weight, or the weights will be different sizes and colors. This includes not only one-piece dumbbells, but weight plates as well.

Step 4

Place bars for barbells flat on the ground if you don't have a rack specifically made for holding them. Keep them out of the way so you don't trip.

Things You'll Need
