How to Use a Propane Grill for BBQ Ribs

Propane grills and charcoal grills each have advantages and disadvantages, including the initial price, the cost of fuel, how they cook your meat and how long the process takes. When you're cooking barbecued ribs, propane grills give you the benefit of quick cooking and the option of adding a smoky flavor to your meat. Cooking ribs on your propane grill is essentially the same process as cooking them over charcoal.

Step 1

Clean the grill thoroughly before you turn it on.

Step 2

Remove the metal grate from your propane grill and place the aluminum tray between two of the burners. Fill the tray with water and place the grate back over the burners.

Step 3

Open the propane valve by twisting it all the way to the left. Turn the burners to "Light," and press the ignition switch or insert a grill match to fire up the grill.

Step 4

Adjust the burners until the temperature gauge on the grill reaches about 225 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 5

Clean and prepare your ribs using the pork rub and any other seasonings you wish to add before placing them on the grill.

Step 6

Place the ribs on the grill over the pan of water. Close the lid and allow the ribs to cook for about two hours, rotating the ribs and adding water to the pan if necessary every half hour or so.

Step 7

Wait until the the ribs have reached an internal temperature of about 155 degrees F before adding the barbecue sauce. Baste the ribs with the sauce on both sides. Rotate the ribs and continue basting them with sauce until they reach a temperature of 160 degrees F, indicating they are ready to eat.
