Football cleats come in many different sizes, styles and types. In order to help you identify the perfect cleats for your sport or position, the manufacturers have developed a simple system to identify each type of cleat. More specifically, football cleats are divided up into two main categories--molded and detachable. Molded cleats are identified by a "M" in the shoe name, while detachable cleats can be identified by a "D."

Advantages of Molded Cleats

Molded cleats are solid pieces of plastic that are formed into the sole of the shoe by the manufacturer. The size and shape of each individual cleat on the shoe varies based on the location on the foot in order to provide you with perfect grip and traction on every step. These cleats are commonly used by lineman and linebackers as they are more concerned about surface area and grip to hold their ground on the football field.

Disadvantages of Molded Cleats

Molded cleats do not tend to last as long as detachables. Over time, the plastic wears away, leaving shorter cleats that are less effective in gaining the necessary traction to be successful. They also tend to be slightly heavier than similar detachable cleats, making them less attractive to players who rely on their speed.

Advantages of Detachable Cleats

Detachable cleats are shoes that have between 7 and 11 screw-in cleats that attach to the sole of the shoe. They come in different lengths to fit the different needs of players and to fit different playing surfaces. They also can come with metal tips that increase the cleats' longevity. These individual cleats can be replaced at any time, allowing a single pair of cleats to be used for a longer period of time. Detachable cleats are often the lightest cleats available and are commonly used by receivers, defensive backs and running backs.

Disadvantages of Detachable Cleats

While there are certainly advantages to using detachable cleats, there are a few drawbacks as well. Sometimes the cleats can fall out in competition, causing a decrease in cutting ability. Detachable cleats also have fewer cleats on the sole, which can be a disadvantage for lineman and defensive players.
