The grind backflip is an advanced snowboarding maneuver that combines two tricks. The first trick, known as a grind, involves sliding across a metallic rail or fiberglass ledge. The backflip occurs as you reach the end of the grinding platform. Practice the backflip on a small kicker ramp before attempting the grind backflip.
Strap In
Align your boots into the bindings that are fastened onto the top of your snowboard. Fasten the binding straps to secure your boots in place. Wait until the snowboarding rail is clear of your fellow riders.
Steer
Rotate the nose of the snowboard down the hill to ride forward. Bend your knees to balance your snowboarding stance. Lean onto the heel or toe edge of the snowboard to steer in the direction of the rail.
Approach
Approach the rail with the toe edge of your snowboard parallel to the grinding obstacle. ABC-of-Snowboarding recommends getting into a crouched position while shifting your weight to your back foot.
Ollie
Extend your legs to jump vertically over the rail. Lift your boots to prevent the edge of your snowboard from making contact with the rail. Align the bottom of your snowboard over the top of the rail to land in a 50-50 grind position.
Grind
Bend your knees to lower your center of gravity as you begin to grind across the top of the snowboarding rail. Center your body weight between the two snowboard bindings to avoid sliding off the edge of the rail. Extend your arms to your sides to increase the balance of your riding stance.
Look
Lean back as you begin to grind toward the end of the snowboarding rail. Look forward to ensure that no other skiers or snowboarders are blocking your path.
Dismount
Shift your body weight onto the rear binding of the snowboard. Extend your legs as the nose of the snowboard reaches the end of the rail.
Backflip
Jump vertically to ensure that you have enough clearance to perform the backward somersault. Transworld Snowboarding recommends throwing your head backward while pulling your knees to your chest.
Spot your Landing
Look down as you reach the inverted position of the backflip.
Absorb the Impact
Bring your feet around to complete the backflip. Bend your knees as the snowboard descends onto the riding terrain.
