Obtaining a degree online is becoming an easier and more acceptable option for higher education. Many prestigious schools are offering degrees through online learning with flexible scheduling options that allow you to continue working. If you are interested in a career in a fitness-related field or working on improving your client base as a trainer, pursuing a degree in exercise physiology online may be a viable option.
The Facts
Obtaining entry into an online degree program requires the same application process and test scores as a traditional university. For a bachelor of science program, a high school diploma or GED is required as well as ACT or SAT scores. Master of science programs require an undergraduate degree in a related field along with GRE scores. Some schools may require proof of a physical examination by a doctor to ensure that you are able to perform the practical aspects of the program. As an online student, your lab work will be performed on your own time in your own gym. Academic courses for a degree in exercise physiology include topics such as kinesiology, anatomy and nutrition.
The structure of each online class varies by program. Some programs follow a blended learning scenario in which students meet in real time online with an instructor once per week and complete the remainder of their classwork on their own, while others have no live interaction at all.
Considerations
Online learning requires a fair amount of prerequisite computer skills. You should feel comfortable using the Internet and sending files via email. If you tend to work quickly through lessons, your class time can be greatly reduced, and your travel time is eliminated by taking your classes on your home computer. As a virtual student, time management is of the essence to keep your assignments current. It may be advisable to start with a small class load so you can assess your level of comfort with online learning. When enrolling in a class, check the technical requirements necessary for your computer to support the program.
Programs
Many schools offer partial online learning. If earning your degree entirely online is your preference, your options are more limited but not out of the question. The California University of Pennsylvania offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in exercise science as well as post-master's certificates that can be completed online from start to finish. The Arizona School of Health and Sciences also offers an online master's of science in human movement. Both of these programs are partnered with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, or NASM, and affiliation with NASM upon graduation is a benefit of these programs.
Careers
Exercise physiologists find careers in different areas depending on the focus of their studies. Personal training, athletic training, physical therapy and sports medicine all fall within the exercise physiology umbrella. Postgraduate education is necessary in many related careers, especially in the medical and rehabilitation fields.
