Steak is a cut of beef from the rear of the cow that is high in calories, fat, cholesterol and protein. The nutritional analysis of steak varies based on the cut and the portion of white to red color of the marble. Because of its rich taste, steak is usually more expensive than chicken or turkey and is often eaten during celebrations.

Calories

A 14-oz. serving of steak has about 738 calories. In general, steak is a high-calorie food, even though some cuts are leaner than others. The more white there is in the marble of the steak, the more calories there are, since fat is high in calories. The leaner the cut, the fewer calories there are in the steak.

Protein

There are 114.26 g of protein in a 14-oz. steak. Steak is a very high-protein food, so it is good for people trying to gain weight or muscle, such as bodybuilders. Since steak is an animal product, the type of protein in it is absorbed well by the body.

Carbohydrates

There are no carbohydrates in steak, naturally, as meats do not have carbohydrates. A 14-oz. steak has no carbohydrates, except it has been marinated in a sauce that has sugar or carbohydrates or if it has been breaded or grilled on the same grill with any carbohydrate foods.

Fat

There are 31.28 g of total fat in a 14-oz. steak. Steak is considered a high-fat food, so it should be eaten in limited quantities by those who need to be on low-fat diets, such as diabetics, obese people or people with heart problems. Also, the type of fat in steak is saturated, which means it is not good for your heart and may clog your arteries and increase your risk of heart attack.

Vitamins and Minerals

Steak is a good source of magnesium, with 99 mg of magnesium per 14-oz. serving of steak. Magnesium helps with muscle contractions and also helps to maintain proper fluid balance. Eating steak is also a good way to get B vitamins such as niacin and riboflavin. A 14-oz. steak has 23.8 mg of niacin. B vitamins promote energy and are essential for your metabolism.
