Chocolate-dipped strawberries are often served with champagne after a romantic dinner. Restaurants and grocery stores sell them in small numbers around Valentine's Day but at extraordinarily high prices. When making chocolate-covered strawberries you must plan ahead, but the savings had by making them yourself is worth the extra effort. A carton of strawberries purchased at the grocery store will make more chocolate-dipped strawberries than most people can eat in a single setting.

Step 1

Tear a piece of wax paper off the roll the same size as your cookie sheet. Lay the wax paper on the cookie sheet and set aside.

Step 2

Wash the strawberries under cool water. Lay the clean strawberries on a layer or two of paper towels to dry while you prepare the chocolate.

Step 3

Place the semisweet chocolate chips in one glass bowl and the white chocolate chips in the second bowl. Set these near the stove so they are within arm's reach when you need them.

Step 4

Fill two saucepans with 2 to 3 inches of water and put on the stove. Bring both pans of water to a simmer at medium heat.

Step 5

Turn the heat off of the stove. Remove the pans from the heat source and place one glass bowl in each of the sauce pans.

Step 6

Stir the chocolate chips with a spatula until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Use a separate spatula for each type of chocolate.

Step 7

Grip the stem or leaves of a single strawberry and dip it into the semisweet chocolate until chocolate covers about ¾ of the strawberry. Turn the strawberry over to control any chocolate drips and place it onto the wax paper to cool.

Step 8

Dip the rest of the strawberries in the semisweet chocolate and lay on the wax paper. Leave a small space between each strawberry to keep them from sticking together.

Step 9

Dip a metal fork into the white chocolate. Use the fork to apply a small amount of white chocolate to each of the strawberries for added decoration.

Step 10

Allow chocolate to set for approximately 30 minutes. Place the entire cookie sheet in the refrigerator to cool the strawberries and make them ready for serving.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you do not like white chocolate, consider rolling the freshly dipped strawberries in crushed peanuts instead. Use hot water to rinse the glass bowls as soon as you are finished dipping the strawberries to make clean up easy.
  • Do not get water into your chocolate or it will cease and be ruined.
