Facial hair grows in both men and women. For men, it is thicker and darker, and they often grow mustaches, goatees and beards as a fashion statement. In women, the hair is finer and less noticeable, but it is still unpleasant and often unwanted. Whether you are a man or a woman, there are a number of ways to remove facial hair and prevent it from coming back.
Step 1
Use a brand new razor and shaving cream. Wash your face with warm water and apply shaving cream to all of the areas of facial hair that you want removed. Press the razor against your skin and take long smooth strokes against the grain of the hair. Every time you take a stroke, wash the razor off in hot water. Keep going until all the hair is removed. Wash your face or take a shower right after to clean off any remnants. Apply a moisturizing cream to keep your skin soft. Do not use this method if you are female because it can make your facial hair more noticeable when it grows back.
Step 2
Use an electric or rechargeable razor. Turn on the razor and place it against your face. Work the razor in slow, circular motions and go all the way around the areas where you have unwanted hair. Only use this removal technique if you are male.
Step 3
Use a pair of tweezers to pluck out unwanted hairs. Tighten the skin with your index finger and thumb. Take the tweezers and grab the hair close to the skin's surface. Pull straight up in a smooth fashion until the hair is out. Repeat wherever you want to remove facial hair. You can also get a hand-held device called an "epilator" that pulls out multiple hairs at a time.
Step 4
Use a facial depilatory cream. Wash your face and leave wet. Apply the cream to an area where hair removal is desired. Let it set up for the time the manufacturer recommends. Take a moist wash cloth and wipe away the hair and cream. Follow the same procedure in all areas where hair removal is desired. This technique is mostly used by women.
Step 5
Use a waxing kit to remove the hair if you are a woman. Apply the wax with the applicator and allow it to set up. Spread the cloth strip over the wax. Firmly pull the strip down and off of your face. Treat every area only once. Wash your face when you are done and apply a moisturizer. Waxing will keep you hair-free anywhere from three to six weeks
Step 6
Talk to a licensed professional to get laser treatment done. In this procedure, the melanin, which gives hair its color, gets hit with a high-powered light beam. The hair follicles end up dying and the hair falls out. According to the Mayo Clinic, you can expect to go through six to eight treatments spaced six to eight weeks apart to achieve good reduction of hair and slowing of hair regrowth. This does not work on blond hair.
Step 7
Get electrolysis done by a professional electrologist for a more permanent effect. In this procedure, a fine-tipped needle is inserted into each hair root and a current of electricity is sent to the tip. The hair follicle then dies and the hair falls out.
Step 8
Talk to your doctor about a prescription formula if you are female. Eflornithine, antiandrogen medications and oral contraceptives are prescription treatments that can be used to reduce the appearance of facial hair and make it finer.
Tips and Warnings
- When you use tweezers, do not pull the hairs out in fast motions. This can cause the hairs to break off. Make sure you use a depilatory cream specifically designed for the face.
- If you choose to use tweezers or wax, be aware that it can be painful.
