Chronic kidney disease, or CKD, affects millions of Americans. Renal failure causes a loss in both health and quality of life. Kidney disease can also lead to organ failure and lowered life expectancy. Patients who suffer from chronic kidney disease have many unique medical needs that may include the use of vitamin supplements specifically formulated for renal failure.

Chronic Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease is defined by a steady deterioration of kidney function. Causes of renal failure may include disease or injury. Hypertension and diabetes are two major risk factors for the development of chronic kidney disease. As kidney function declines, the kidneys are unable to adequately filter waste and other metabolic products. In addition, the kidney can lose its ability to maintain the homeostasis of fluids, proteins, blood products, electrolytes and other important molecules. The ability of the kidney to produce important hormones is also impaired. In severe cases, patients may require dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Vitamin Deficiency

Vitamins provide many functions within the body and are essential to maintaining tissue health. This is especially true in the case of chronic kidney disease. Patients who undergo dialysis can experiences a loss of water soluble vitamins such as B-vitamins and ascorbic acid. In addition, the presence of blood in the urine can result in anemia. In this case, vitamins are important in maintaining the function of remaining red blood cells.

Why OTC Vitamins May Not Work

Although there are many multivitamin products and formulations available for purchase without a prescription, they may not be appropriate for use in the context of renal failure. Many products include additional elements and minerals that could accumulate within the body because the kidneys are no longer able to adequately filter and maintain homeostasis. As a result, the use of these products can cause more harm than benefit.

Renal Vitamins

It is important that CKD patients be aware that vitamins specifically formulated for renal failure require a written prescription by a physician. The formulations typically contain only water-soluble vitamins such as B-complex and vitamin C, which can be depleted in cases of renal failure. Patients with concerns regarding chronic kidney disease or renal vitamins should consult with their physician.
