Prosom is the brand name of the drug estazolam, a member of the benzodiazepine family. Drugs.com reports that estazolam impacts the brain chemicals to diminish sleep problems, including insomnia. Prosom may be used to treat patients who have difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep. As with any medication, Prosom has the potential for side effects.
Less Serious Side Effects
Drugs.com reports several side effects that are considered serious only if they become persistent or bothersome. Possible symptoms include forgetfulness, weakened muscles, loss of coordination or balance, tingling in the body, pain or numbness in the body, burning sensations in the body, headache, blurred vision, mood depression, nervousness, excitability, irritability, nausea, vomiting, stomach upset, dry mouth and/or increased thirst. eMedTV.com reports that drowsiness occurs in up to 42 percent of individuals who use Prosom. This refers to sleepiness during times when an individual would normally be awake. eMedTV.com also suggests up to 3 percent of users will experience a sluggish, "hangover" effect in the morning after taking Prosom.
Serious Side Effects
Serious side effects should be reported to a doctor immediately and the medication should be discontinued. Drugs.com reports possible serious side effects like shallow breathing, rapid or pounding heartbeats, confusion, speech slurring, abnormal thoughts or behavior, hallucinating, agitation, aggression, suicidal thoughts, thoughts of self-harm, restless muscle movements in the eyes, jerky tongue or jaw movements, restless neck muscles, skin paleness, bruising easily, bleeding easily, unusual weakness and/or urination problems. Other serious side effects may mimic the flu--fever, chills and body aches, according to the Mayo Clinic. Prosom may lead to liver problems with continued use. The side effects associated with liver deterioration include nausea, stomach pain, mild fever, appetite changes, darkened urine, clay-colored stools and yellowing of the skin or the eyes, according to the Mayo Clinic.
Allergic Reaction

Rare Side Effects
