Viagra is the trade name for a medication called sildenafil. It is commonly prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction, which can include impotence or trouble maintaining an erection. Viagra works by relaxing smooth muscle in the penis, which allows more blood flow during sexual stimulation, aiding erection. Viagra typically is taken in doses ranging from 25 to one 100 mg.
Step 1
Talk with your doctor before taking Viagra. This is important to ensure that your heart and cardiovascular system are able to withstand both the strain of sexual intercourse and the effects of Viagra. Your doctor will also need to review any medications you are taking to prevent drug-drug interactions.
Step 2
Take the 100 mg of Viagra (either as one pill or as two 50 mg pills) 30 to 60 minutes before sexual intercourse (although it will still be effective if taken as early as four hours before).
Step 3
Once sexual stimulation occurs, Viagra will help you achieve and maintain an erection. If you have trouble with this, do not take more Viagra, as this can lead to serious side effects.
