The adrenal glands are part of your endocrine system, which makes numerous hormones for vital daily functions. The adrenals are two small glands that rest on top of each kidney. The hypothalamus and pituitary gland in your brain signal your adrenal glands to release hormones for controlling your metabolism, maintenance of blood volume, development of sex characteristics and stress response. A well-balanced and nutritious diet contributes to keeping your adrenal glands healthy.

Adrenal Dysfunction

Adrenal insufficiency, or Addison's disease, is a disorder that occurs when your adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones. Conversely, overactive adrenal hormone production can result in tumor development on the glands. The cause of the damage leading to these conditions is destruction of the outer part of the gland called the adrenal cortex or the inner gland called the medulla. Contributing factors for adrenal dysfunction include autoimmune diseases, chronic infections or the spread of cancer. Treatment for adrenal disorders includes hormone replacement or inhibiting medications, surgical removal of tumors or chemotherapy.

Adrenal Hormones

The adrenal glands responsible for regulating your stress hormones go through daily testing. Epinephrine and norepinephrine are the hormones secreted by the adrenal medulla that are prominent in your response to stress. Cortisol, secreted by the adrenal cortex, helps moderate your blood sugar between meals. When you do not eat regularly, healthfully or nutritiously, lack restful sleep and consume products that rapidly raise then drop your blood sugar, your adrenal glands become compromised. Good dietary habits along with healthy lifestyle habits can protect you from the potential risk factors associated with adrenal gland problems.

Fresh Produce and Whole Grains

Sugar-filled cookies, cakes, snacks and caffeinated beverages are not optimal for sustaining healthy adrenal function. These types of foods may give you a quick sugar boost but a sugar crash follows. Reach for the fresh fruit and vegetables instead of junk foods. Vibrant-colored berries, apples and plums, or carrots, celery and salad greens give your body vitamins and energy. Whole-grain breads and cereals also give you nutrients to help you stay active and alert throughout the day. Eat five to eight servings of produce and grains daily so you can stay energized.

Fish, Chicken, Beans and Nuts

Protein is important for maintaining the health of your muscles and cells. Foods like fish, chicken, beans and nuts are lean sources of protein you can eat daily. If you must eat red meat, limit your consumption to a few times a month and choose lean cuts like sirloin or tenderloin. Fresh tuna on your salad or a small serving of almonds as a snack nourishes you and prevents you from fatigue when you eat regularly. Drink plenty of water throughout your day and consume four to six small meals. When you feed your body regularly with healthy foods, your adrenal glands do not have to overwork.
