Lung cancer is the deadliest form of cancer for Americans, reports the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When cancerous cells develop in your lungs and have the capacity to spread to other areas of your body, lung cancer can result. The good news is that if this cancer is detected early, it is treatable. A plant based diet along with good fats and low fat dairy can also prevent lung cancer.
Fruits & Vegetables
The American Cancer Society reports that fruits and vegetables may help to prevent lung cancer and reduce the effect cancer has once it has spread. These plant based foods are naturally rich in antioxidants, which are known to help fight free radical damage. Blackberries, blueberries, grapefruit, spinach, kale, romaine lettuce and peppers contain some of the most antioxidants of all fruits and veggies.
Whole Grains
The University of Maryland Medical Center states that whole grain foods can help to decrease common symptoms associated with lung cancer; chest pain, fatigue and shortness of breath are a few. Foods such as quinoa, millet, brown rice and oat bran have plenty of essential nutrients, including protein, zinc, iron and fiber. The latter helps expunge toxic buildup and waste products from your body. Be sure to stick with whole grains instead of refined or processed grains, like flour or white bread; they are mostly devoid of nutrient value.
Omega 3 Fats
Omega 3 fatty acids help to improve your immune functioning, reduce inflammation in the body and aid in cell tissue repair, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Tuna, flounder, herring, salmon and trout contain the most significant amounts of omega-3 fats. Walnuts, linseed oil and flax seeds also have Omega 3s if you do not like to eat fish.
Low Fat Dairy Products
Protein and calcium are important nutrients to keep your body strong, keep your weight stable, prevent cancer and aid in cancer recovery. Most low fat dairy products like skim milk, yogurt, cottage cheese and eggs are healthy cancer fighting foods. Be sure to choose the low fat or non fat dairy products, because full fat versions contain a lot of calories and unhealthy saturated fats.
