Syntha-6 is a supplement manufactured by the sports nutrition company BSN. This high-protein product comes in powdered form and is intended for use in conjunction with exercise training and athletics. Due to the blend of fat, carbohydrates and protein, BSN Syntha-6 may help improve your body composition and help you reach your fitness goals. As with all supplements, you should consult a doctor prior to using Syntha-6.

Suggested Use

According to BSN, Syntha-6 protein powder supports athletic and body composition goals. The company recommends men take two scoops of Syntha-6 two to four times per day. BSN suggests women take one scoop of Syntha-6 two to four times per day. Syntha-6 can be mixed with water, but you can also mix it with milk to increase the protein content and calorie count.

Calorie Content

Each scoop of Syntha-6 provides 200 calories, which is 10 percent of the daily suggested calorie intake of 2,000. If you are a male and you consume the maximum amount of Syntha-6 recommended by BSN, the total intake will be 1,600 calories, while women taking in the maximum suggested intake will consume 800 calories. Consuming too many calories can cause fat gain, so be sure to assess the calorie content of foods you eat and the number of calories burned during exercise; it would take just under an hour of weightlifting to burn off one scoop of Syntha-6.

Protein

Syntha-6 provides 22 g of protein per scoop. While this is 44 percent of the suggested daily intake of protein, nutrition researcher Dr. John Berardi suggests that eating more than the suggested intake of this nutrient can be beneficial, as increased protein intake triggers beneficial hormonal changes. Dr. Berardi suggests that consuming 2 g of protein per kilogram of body weight, rather than the suggested daily intake, can promote increased muscle gains in the context of a calorie surplus, or reduced fat mass in the context of dieting. The protein in Syntha-6 comes from a range of sources, including egg, whey, milk and soy, so check the label prior to use if you have an allergy to certain ingredients.

Carbohydrates

Syntha-6 is a low-carbohydrate supplement, as each scoop provides 14 g of carbohydrates, with 2 g of sugar. However, having multiple scoops per day -- as suggested by BSN -- may not be appropriate if you are on a low-carbohydrate diet, as your carbohydrate intake will increase significantly. Syntha-6 is rich in fiber, with 5 g per scoop. The University of Maryland Medical Center explains fiber can help encourage weight loss, because it reduces hunger, and may also reduce your cholesterol levels.

Fat

Each scoop of Syntha-6 contains 6 g of total fat, with 2 g of saturated fat. Some of the fat in Syntha-6 comes from medium-chain triglyceride powder, an ingredient that contains a special type of fatty acid called medium-chain triglycerides. Research from the January 2003 issue of the "International Journal of Obesity and Related Metabolic Disorders" indicates that consumption of medium-chain trigylcerides may promote increased fat oxidation, or burning.

Variations

In addition to the Syntha-6 powder, BSN offers two other forms of this product, a protein bar and a ready-to-drink, or RTD, supplement. These variations do not have the same nutritional values as Syntha-6 powder, so you may have to use them differently to achieve your desired results.
