Gout is a medical condition caused caused by high uric acid levels in the body. Purines play a large role in controlling gout attacks because consumption of purine-rich foods can lead to elevated uric acid levels. If you have gout, it is very important that you control the amount of purine in your diet to make living with gout easier.
Gout
Gout is a form of arthritis that is caused by high uric acid levels. Uric acid is a normal waste product in the body that is removed by the kidneys. In gout, uric acid builds up in the fluid that surrounds the joint, causing swelling and inflammation. The joints most commonly affected are the knee, ankle and big toe. Uric acid may also build up in the urinary tract and cause kidney stones. Symptoms of gout include joint pain, joint tenderness and fever.
Purine
Purines are composed of six- and five-member nitrogen containing rings that are fused together. There are four purines, adenine, guanine, xanthine and hypoxanthin. Purines are high in uric acid, which can lead to gout attacks when consumed in large amounts. For most individuals, a normal intake of purine is 600 to 1,000 mg/day. However, if you have gout, your daily intake of purine should ideally be 100 to 150 mg/day.
Diet Guidelines
Foods rich in purine should be avoided to help prevent gout attacks. Foods such as fish, organ meats, shrimps, sardines and red meat contain higher amounts of purine. Alcohol should also be avoided to help prevent gout attacks. Foods that are lower in purine include pasta, tofu, almonds and apricots. Dairy products are also lower in purine and may be beneficial in reducing your risk of gout.
Other Considerations
In addition to diet, gout may also be treated with medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDS. These are aspirin-like medications that decrease inflammation and joint pain. If appropriate, weight loss can also help control gout. It is recommended that weight loss be slow and gradual. Following a healthy diet, being compliant with medications and maintaining a healthy weight can make living with gout easier.
