Not being able to supply enough breast milk for your growing infant can be devastating for some mothers. Before you turn to formula, you may want to try some natural ways to increase your supply. Fenugreek is an herb that may allow you to do just that. Always consult with your doctor before taking any supplement, especially when breastfeeding.
Fenugreek
Fenugreek is an herb classified as a galactogogue. According to Breastfeeding.com, it is one of the world's oldest alternative medications. A galactogogue works by stimulating the milk and sweat glands, working to increase their production. Many women have used fenugreek to increase lactation with success.
Dosage
The amount of fenugreek you must take to increase lactation is quite a bit, at least 3,500 mg per day. Fenugreek can be consumed as a pill, tincture or tea. A 500 mg capsule should be taken between seven and 14 times per day, according to Kellymom.com, a website maintained by international board-certified lactation consultant Kelly Bonyata. Drink fenugreek tea two to three times daily or use 1 to 2 ml of the tincture two to three times per day.
Duration
It usually takes at least 24 to 72 hours before you will notice an increase in your milk supply. However, it may take you longer. Most women can discontinue their use of fenugreek once milk supply has increased, but there may be no harm in taking it long-term.
Side Effects and Safety
According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, fenugreek is safe for lactating moms. There are only mild side effects associated with it. These include a maple syrup smell coming from your sweat and urine. You may also experience loose bowel movements and some upset stomach. When you stop taking fenugreek, these side effects diminish.
