If you follow the Atkins diet, you have probably eliminated many of the high-carb foods and beverages that are commonly consumed in the standard American diet. Pasta, rice, potatoes, breakfast cereals and desserts are too high in carbs to be part of the Atkins diet. Instead of these high-carb foods, the Atkins diet is based on non-starchy vegetables, such as cauliflower, leafy greens and bell peppers, protein from meat, poultry and cheese, as well as fats from butter, olive oil, avocado and nuts. Regular soft drinks are also too high in carbohydrates, but there are many Atkins diet-friendly beverages to choose from to quench your thirst.
The Four Phases
The Atkins program is divided into different phases, each recommending a specific carbohydrate intake. The first phase restricts carbohydrates to less than 20 g a day, with the objective of helping your body switch from using carbohydrates to burning fat as quickly as possible. The second phase, called the ongoing weight loss phase, allows you to reintroduce small amounts of carbohydrates back into your diet every week, until the optimal amount of carbohydrates, which varies from one person to another, is determined. The third phase, called the pre-maintenance phase, does the same by allowing slightly more carbohydrates, while the fourth phase, called the lifelong maintenance phase, helps you stay at your optimal carbohydrate intake level to maintain your desired weight.
Diet Soda Nutritional Information
Diet soda does not contain any added sugar and is sweetened with aspartame or other artificial sweeteners. For this reason, diet soda is free of calories, free of sugar and free of carbohydrates. Double-check the label of any diet soda you buy to ensure that the carb content corresponds to zero.
Diet Soda and the Atkins Diet
Because diet soda is completely free of carbohydrates -- although you should always double-check the label to make sure -- it is a suitable beverage for the Atkins diet. Whether you are in the first, second, third or fourth phase of the diet, diet soda is a way to quench your thirst while sticking to your carbohydrate target. However, if diet soda triggers cravings, it may be best to eliminate it.
Other Beverage Alternatives
Replace diet soda with any carb-free beverage. Water with lemon or lime juice, herbal tea, sugar-free coffee, club soda, broth and flavored seltzer all constitute carb-free beverage options for the Atkins diet. Avoid all juices, cocktails, punches and other carb-containing drinks. Alcohol is not allowed during the induction phase, but can be consumed in moderation during the subsequent phases.
