Glucosamine, a naturally occurring substance in the body, plays a key role in building cartilage--the flexible connective tissue found by the joints and various other areas of the body. Though glucosamine is probably best known as a treatment for osteoarthritis, the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center notes mixed evidence of this benefit. Suggested dosages for this supplement have been established but check with your doctor for guidance on the proper dose for your circumstances and other aspects of safe usage.

Suggested Dosage

A daily dose of 1,500mg daily has been suggested for glucosamine. You can either take 500mg three times daily or one large dose, according to the UPMC. Drugs.com, a website that compiles information from various medical databases, says doses of 3,200mg have been used in studies but no evidence exists that this higher dose provides stronger symptom relief.

Types of Glucosamine Supplements

Glucosamine supplements come in three forms: glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride and n-acetyl glucosamine. Glucosamine sulfate pills might have high levels of sodium and potassium, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. Use could prove problematic in certain instances such as the presence of kidney disease or other conditions influenced by excess levels of these nutrients or if you use potassium-sparing diuretics. The UPMC notes some debate exists over which supplement offers the best absorption but reports research has shown glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride appear to have similar absorption rates.

Medication Interactions

Glucosamine might reduce the effectiveness of insulin or other blood-sugar-lowering medications. However, the UPMC reports as of 2011 that newer research indicates it does not appear to raise blood sugar levels. If you have diabetes and use medication to control your blood sugar, you should consult with your doctor before using glucosamine and monitor your blood sugar carefully.

Side Effects

Drugs.com notes glucosamine might cause mild side effects such as stomach upset and itching. Other potential side effects include gas, bloating and heartburn. Taking the supplements with food might ease some of these problems.
