Without iron, you would not be able to survive. Red blood cells rely on iron to help carry oxygen to cells throughout the body. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, iron also helps produce adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, which is the body's energy source. Insufficient iron levels can lead to iron-deficiency anemia. Herbs that contain iron may help restore iron levels. Speak with your doctor before using herbs for low iron.
Causes
Low iron or iron-deficiency anemia can lead to fatigue and weakness. Children, pregnant women and women in their reproductive years are at a higher risk of developing anemia. Low iron or anemia may be caused by menstruation, bleeding ulcers, trauma or surgery and can range from mild to moderate to severe. In addition, low iron may also be the result of insufficient dietary iron. Too much can be dangerous as well and may lead to liver damage or diabetes.
Alfalfa
Alfalfa is a member of the pea family that can be found growing in the United States along roadsides and in fields. According to the Medicinal Herb Info website, alfalfa has been used to treat anemia, vitamin and mineral deficiency, gas, and edema, to name a few. Alfalfa contains hemostatic properties--as well as iron--that may help restore iron to the body. Alfalfa is commonly added to salads and other foods for flavoring. You can also mix 1 tbsp. of dried alfalfa herb to 8 oz. of warm water and drink one glass per day.
Blackberry
Blackberry, often referred to as dewberry, is a perennial plant with leaves that are covered in a fine hair-like substance. Blackberry can be found growing in dry, sandy, soil along roadsides in the United States. Blackberry contains an array of nutrients, including sodium, pectin, vitamins A and C, carbohydrates, and iron. Blackberry has been used to treat anemia, diarrhea, cholera and upset stomach. According to Medicinal Herb Info, 1 tsp. of dried blackberry leaves can be added to 1/2 cup of water and may be drunk twice per day. The site warns that blackberry treatments should not be used for longer than one week without resting.
Warnings
It is strongly recommended that you speak with your doctor before using herbs to treat low iron or any other health conditions. Herbs may not be safe to use if you are taking certain over-the-counter or prescription medications. If an allergic reaction develops while using herbs, stop using them immediately and see your doctor for an evaluation.
