Just as the bones and muscles in your torso and limbs need proper nutrition to stay healthy and strong, so do your eyes. You can help avoid an array of vision problems by eating the right foods. However, diet may only be part of the solution for some people. If you suspect a problem with your eyesight, consult your physician, an optometrist or an ophthalmologist.

Vegetables

The nutrients found in leafy, green vegetables such as kale and broccoli can help improve eyesight. Vitamins C, B12, A and calcium are beneficial. Avocado and carrots may also aid vision. Avocado is rich in lutein. According Symptom Find, lutein can help cut your chance of contracting macular degeneration, which is blurred vision or a loss of central vision. Lutein also helps prevent cataracts. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which is believed to help protect your eyes from sun damage.

Citrus Fruits

Vitamin C is critical in helping maintain a healthy set of eyes. Citrus fruits such as oranges, mangoes, lemons and grapefruit are rich in Vitamin C. This important vitamin helps the body develop and maintain collagen in the eye's cornea. Vitamin C also helps keep capillaries in your retina healthy and strong.

Fish

Omega-3 fatty acids help protect blood vessels throughout your body, including the eyes. Blood vessels are significant to your eyesight because they help control the important muscles in your eyes. Fatty fish such as salmon are a healthy source of omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients also help improve brain power. Salmon also provides Vitamins A and D, which help protect your eyes and can improve your vision.

Meat and Beef

If you aren't a vegetarian, try to incorporate lean beef and turkey into your diet. They provide much-needed iron and zinc for superior vision. Other meats such as bison and buffalo help provide iron and zinc, as do emu and ostrich. Vision Correction Pro recommends emu meat if you want to keep your eyesight strong, as the lean meat contains more iron than beef.

Drinks and Dessert

You can also help your eyesight with an occasional glass of wine with your meal and a dessert of dark chocolate. Wine and dark chocolate contain flavanoids. Flavanoids help improve blood circulation, which is critical to healthy eyes. Healthy blood circulation and blood vessels will keep your cornea and eye lens strong as you get older.
