Turkey and cranberry is the perfect combination, so don't feel that you have to wait until Thanksgiving to enjoy it. Cooking in a slow cooker is a mess-free and easy way of cooking delicious meals. Preparing your meal in a slow cooker not only enables you to come home to the smell of fresh cooking, it also saves you energy, and therefore, money, according to the University of Wyoming library research service.
Slow Cooking
Slow cooking may sound as though it takes a lot of time, but in fact it's the total opposite. The good thing about using a slow cooker is that you need only fill it with food before you set off for work in the morning, and you will return home to a ready-cooked dinner. A slow cooker uses a very low voltage, meaning it's safe to leave the house with it bubbling away, and the best thing is that it means only one pot to wash.
Turkey and Cranberries
The biggest problem with turkey meat is that there's so much of it. Chose wisely, because it's a shame to throw excess turkey away. But the good news is that cooked turkey will keep for up to four days in the refrigerator and up to four months in the freezer, per the USDA. Keep fresh cranberries wrapped in a sealed plastic bag in the refrigerator for up to two months or in the freezer for up to one year, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Cranberry Sauce Recipe
Making your own delicious cranberry sauce is far tastier -- and more satisfying -- than using a jar or can. Squeeze the juice of a clementine into a pan with cranberries, sugar and port wine. Cook on a medium temperature for about five minutes, or until the cranberries begin to soften. Squeeze some lemon juice over the cranberry mixture, stir through, then remove it from the heat and set aside.
Slow Cooker Recipe
Grease the inside of your slow cooker with oil. Place a chopped onion into the pot, season a couple of turkey breasts or drumsticks well and add them to the cooker. Pour your homemade cranberry sauce over the turkey and onions, cover with the lid and cook it on the low setting for eight hours.
